Misunderstandings about a new California law led some to believe — incorrectly — that salt chlorine generators have been banned there.
The law addresses a specific type of residential water softener that releases salty water into sewage systems. Currently, the state is looking to increase the amount of nonpotable water it recycles for use in areas such as agriculture and landscaping. High salt levels complicate that process.
The new law allows local agencies to place restrictions — or outright bans — on such products after taking public comments.
Among the kinds of softeners not covered are activated carbon, reverse osmosis and exchange-tank softeners.
Regions affected by the legislation stretch from Southern California north past Sacramento.
After the law passed, EcoSmarte, a manufacturer of nonsalt alternative purification systems for homes and pools, broadcast-faxed a note to pool and spa professionals across the nation stating that the law banned salt chlorine generators in the state. Click Here to Read the Full Article

Winterizing Your Pool
As you can tell from the change in temperature, it's becoming time to winterize your pool.
Here's a couple quick tips to consider:
- Start by checking the pH level of your pool, confirming it is near 7.5
- Check the chlorine level, to make sure algae doesn't accumulate during the winter
- Run your pump about 6 hours each day to prevent algae build-up
- Check for any leaks
- Switch your skimmer valve off and drain water about 6 inches below the skimmers bottom
- Clean your summer winter cover
- Drain water from your pump, filter, and heater (look for a drain plug!)

Fall / Winter Pool Tips
Unfortunately, summer is coming to an end, and your pool will stop being used as frequently. To make sure it stays in mint condition until the next season, here's a couple helpful hints...
Ideal pool conditions from winter to spring:
- Running on freeze protection & low filtration hours
- 99% salt generators have been in sleep mode (not producing chlorine)
- Low chlorine and salt readings are to be expected until salt is added and generator is turned on.
Recommended to do list:
- Boost or shock Aqua Pure every six weeks in Fall / Winter
- Increase salt levels from 3000 - 3500 ppm by adding salt as required
- Skimmer and pump baskets should be cleaned

Swimming Pool Dangers
With the onset of the summer months and the bringing of the hot weather plus kids being out of school, a swimming pool is a great way to relax and to stay cool.
But with a pool, you must be responsible for not only the upkeep, but the safety of your guests.
1) Put a fence around the pool or around the yard to keep the neighbors out. I know when I was growing up, one of the most exciting things to do was to sneak into the neighbors yard in the middle of the night to swim in their pool.
2) All approved guests, make sure they know how to swim. Even if they are in a couple of feet deep, they could still drown.
3) Always watch the kids while they are in the pool. Make sure they and adult kids are not diving into the pool at the shallow end.
4) Stress proper pool behavior. No running, no dunking, no rough play.
5) Always wear sunscreen
6) Keep the pool clean -- no soiled diapers
7) Don't keep electrical equipment near the pool
8) Stay away from the drains
There are manyy other common sense rules that you should follow to make your perfect day an enjoyable one, and not having it turn into a nightmare.
